My Trip to the Jungle in Ecuador

Image
At 7:00 a.m. my family and I hopped the bus to an Ecuadorian town in the rainforest called Mindo. When we got to our hostel we checked in and took a walk around town. We were getting hungry, so we stopped in at a pizza place called “El Tigrillo”. They had a nice brick oven and they made really good pizza. The next morning we got up and went on a cable car where we could hike to a waterfall. There were lots of birds and butterflies along the way. It took us 3 hours to hike there and back. We even saw a toucan. As soon as we got back we went to a butterfly garden where there were beautiful owl butterflies and blue morphos that landed on us. After eating a chocolate bar that was made in Mindo we packed up and headed back home. Justin DeChambeau is eleven years old and lives in Cotacachi, Ecuador. He loves swimming and ziplines.

The Beauty of Salzburg

Image
There is so much to say about Salzburg.  Some come here for Mozart, the town’s favorite son.  Some come for a more recent musical legacy, The Sound of Music . But either way, the people who come to this city in north-central Austria are immediately spellbound by its beauty.   I know I was. Salzburg is very much a Baroque city, and the streets of the Old Town reflects that. The interiors do, as well — Salzburg’s Dom is one of the city’s most striking architectural wonders. Amazing, right? Salzburg is filled with museums — I kept thinking of how much my museum-phile best friend, Beth, would have loved it here! — and the best way to see them all is to get a Salzburg Card.  It gives you free entry to most museums and attractions, as well as free public transit. Of all the activities, the one you must do is take the funicular to Hohensalzburg Fortress (pictured in the top photo), which you see from everywhere in the city — and you’l...

Architecture and Design in Las Vegas

Image
Several years ago, I remember taking a look at a 3-d model of one of the most ambitious constructions projects of the United States.  Private investment was able to attract architects such as Cesar Pelli, Helmut Jahn and Daniel Libeskind to Las Vegas.  While looking carefully at the model from different perspectives, I wondered if the project was ever going to be completed. Fast forwarding to the first trimester of 2010, I found myself surrounded by the gravity defying angles and shiny materials of the CityCenter.  A mix of emotions rushed thru my body.  I was blown away by the aesthetical appeal of the new compound.  At the same time, the place felt like most unVegas places I had ever seen. When I first visited the city (circa 2003), the major attractions were the large themed resorts and casinos (they still are in some way). For elegance, The Bellagio and The Caesar’s Palace were visited. ‘Old School Buildings’         During those times, ...

Learning to Surf in Bali

Image
I would like to apologize to every guy I’ve ever mocked for wearing a speedo. That may be a strange way to start a post about surfing lessons in Bali, but stay with me here! Like it or not, you just can’t surf in a bikini.  Boobs will be flying all over the place, and let’s not talk about the multiple kinds of wedgies you can get. Because of this, I was wearing the standard surf uniform — board shorts and a short-sleeved lycra top — for my surfing lesson with Rip Curl School of Surf.  And I quickly learned that swimming in boards shorts is incredibly uncomfortable. Board shorts are constricting, they tickle you, they cling in odd places, they feel weird in the water.  I wanted to rip them off. So, speedo enthusiasts, I finally get it. And I apologize. I’ve never surfed in my life, but like most people, I’ve always wanted to learn! Bali is world-famous for its surfing, and Kuta is a great place for beginners as well as advanced surfers....

Papillon Photos: Manuel Antonio National Park

Image
Manuel Antonio National Park is one of Costa Rica’s most famous parks.  In terms of size, it is the smallest national park.  However, don’t get fooled because of this fact.  The park is full of wildlife, beautiful beaches and hiking trails. Me at the entrance of the park One of the beaches outside the park Inside the park If you are visiting Costa Rica, do not miss the opportunity to visit this gem.  It is easy to get to the park from San Jose (Costa Rica’s capital).  You can arrange transportation with a private company for a reasonable price.  If you want to consider a cheaper option, there are public buses that make the route several times during the day.  You should buy your tickets at the bus station at least two days before the trip.  You should make advanced arrangements because the bus has numbered seats.  You can choose to make Quepos (the getaway town) or the entrance of the park your final destination.  If you decide to stop at Quepos, there is public tr...
