No More “Slow Food Revolution”

Due to the two online Spanish classes I am taking this summer, these days it seems all I do is work at the store or do homework. But I have also been planning my next chocolate adventure, and this Wednesday-Saturday I will be visiting Finca San Juan, a plantation in northern Guatemala! Honestly, I don’t know exactly what I’ll be doing beyond taking publicity photos and learning a lot about the processes involved in cacao cultivation. But I am very excited! Jorge, the owner of Finca San Juan, the cacao plantation I mentioned above. Before Seeing The Farm, One Must Define the Farm Before the big adventure south, I spent Monday afternoon with my housemate, Leo. It started with a trip to the local store named “Orgánica,” where one finds some of the only imported organic foods, albeit at double or triple the price in the US. After this we were distracted by a cute little bakery named Sweet Brooklyn, and then we walked all over Zone 10 and Zona Viva . Fi...

What to eat in Madrid

Image
Since moving to Madrid I have spent some time working my way around the many wonderful restaurants (I know, it’s a hard life) and trying all the local food. Spain is well known for its delicious local food. If you are visiting Madrid you may have a limited amount of time in the city but a huge selection of yummy Spanish foods you want to try. This article covers my suggestions for the best food to eat in Madrid. They are available on bar and restaurant menus, are reasonably priced and dishes that locals enjoy (no tourist traps). Tapas style of dish is popular in Madrid. Locals will enjoy a quick breakfast, mid morning snack, a large lunch, early evening snack and tapas dinner. Tapas is smaller plates of food perfect for sharing and eating slowly while drinking and chatting with friends and family. A larger portions of tapas are called raciones. These are my top 12, absolute favourite, you must try, eat them or you will regret it Spanish dishes. RELATED article: A guide to eating p...

Walnut Creek Food Tour

Image
Recently we visited San Francisco for a weekend and also spent some time exploring the neighboring cities. We had a morning to hang out in Walnut Creek while waiting for our afternoon plans and thought, “why not do a food tour for breakfast?” Now, keep in mind, Walnut Creek is a pretty small suburb and there’s not a whole lot to do. It also isn’t exactly the foodie capital of California. Despite that, we had a lot of fun of our food tour. We hope you will have fun reading about our experience and get ideas on where to eat if your adventures ever take you to Walnut Creek. So here we go, our Walnut Creek food tour! First stop- Brunch First things first, we needed to get some brunch in us. We quickly learned that Walnut Creek is not exactly a brunch sort of place. We found ONE (read: one!) place that served brunch. I promise not being foodie snobs here, but LA has countless brunch places so we were a little surprised by this. Anyway, we put our names down and didn...

A Foodie’s Guide to Beirut

Image
Eating in Lebanon is one of our favorite things to do. So much so, that we felt we needed a whole post dedicated to it. If you are a foodie, Beirut is the city for you! Figuring out where to eat is not a problem at all. Almost every street you pass by will have dozens of cafes and restaurants and a Trip Adviser search will give you a large list of places.  We have never had a bad meal in Lebanon so you really can’t go wrong with anywhere you choose, just avoid places that seem like they are trying too hard to be American or fast food type places that don’t serve Arabic food. Just in case you need help narrowing it down, here are our favorite places to eat in Lebanon and the top things to try! What To Eat: 1. Maneesh One of Lena’s absolute favorite things to eat in Lebanon! We often order these for breakfast. It’s basically an Arabic version of a flatbread pizza. It comes spread with zaatar {a blend spices but mainly thyme} or cheese. Lena likes to get half a...
